Sutherlandia and Tumors
This brief document is intended to answer the frequent questions asked about the use of Sutherlandia tablets/capsules in patients with malignent tumors. There is a well-established present and historical folk-use of Sutherlandia in the treatment of tumors, indicated by the African name Kankerbossie, or Cancer Bush in English. This has created expectations from patients, friends and relatives which should be tempered by responsible information about recent clinical trials.

Quality-of-Life Tonic:
There is preliminary clinical evidence that Sutherlandia has a direct anti-tumor effect in some cancers, and also acts as an immune stimulant, but Sutherlandia should not be recommended as a so-called “universal tumor cure”, but rather as a quality-of-life tonic.

Mood:
Sutherlandia decreases feelings of depression caused by the proces. It elevates the mood of the patient, who can cope better with the whole situation.

Appetite and weight:
It is an established fact that up to one third of all cancer patients succumb to the wasting syndrome, rather than to the actual tumor mass. Appropriate doses of select chemotypes and varieties of Sutherlandia dramatically improves appetite, and weight-gain can be expected in wasted patients. The first 5 kg gain is common after six weeks of treatment. In patients who are not wasted, weight-gain is not usual.

Energy levels and exercise tolerance:
Sutherlandia typically improves the energy levels and exercise tolerance of patients, and gives an enhanced sense of well-being.

Qualified Healthcare Professionals:
It is recommended that all cancer patients get assessed and managed by an appropriately qualified healthcare professional with recognized experience in managing cancer. The patient will need to make an informed decision about the treatment modalities to follow in his / her specific case. A decision should be made on whether or not Sutherlandia and / or other natural approaches to managing cancer should be included, and if so at what stage of the planned treatment regimen.

Nutrition:
It is recommended that any anti-tumor management programme should include meticulous attention to optimizing diet in consultation with a professional dietist or orthomolecular therapist with experience and interest in cancer.

Emotional, Cultural and Spiritual aspects:
The participation of a psychologist, traditional healer and / or spiritual person could also be considered as part of the holistic team to provide support for the important but neglected emotional, cultural and spiritual aspects of the illness. Psychological therapist organisations like Simonton and the dutch NTTT are specialised in the psychological treatment of cancer.
Sutherlandia can be very helpfull to assist as a natural mood enhancer.

Dose of Sutherlandia:
The minimum dose of select Sutherlandia varieties for enhanced quality-of-life is one tablet (300 mg) or capsule (400 mg) twice a day, after meals. This can be taken long-term.

Many cancer patients, in an effort to explore possible antitumor activity, choose to self-medicate with even three times a day two tablets (3 x 600 mg) or capsules (3 x 800 mg) after meals. This is typically taken long term.

Precautions:
It is not recommend that Sutherlandia be taken during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
