Sutherlandia and Diabetes

This brief document is intended to answer the frequent questions that get asked about the use of Sutherlandia tablets in patients with type-1 and type-2 diabetes. There is a well-established present and historical folk-use of Sutherlandia in the treatment of type-2 diabetes. This folk-use should be tempered by responsible information.

Chemistry and Pharmacology
The four bestknown compounds that contribute to the efficacy of this medicinal plant are:
* the non-protein amino acid L-canavanine
* Pinitol
* GABA
* Asparagine.

Of these ingredients, Pinitol has a documented anti-diabetic activity (Narayanan,1987) and is likely to be at least one of the phyto chemicals which contribute to anti-diabetic activity in Sutherlandia.

Recommendations for Patients and qualified Healthcare Practitioners:
Since diabetes is a potentially life-threatening condition, it is not recommended that any diabetic attempt self-medication for this condition. Type-1 diabetics, who are well controlled, are advised to maintain their existing insulin regimen. Type-2 diabetics, who are interested in supplementing their management with Sutherlandia, should discuss this with a licensed health care professional with an interest in diabetes. An informed decision should be made on whether or not Sutherlandia and / or other natural approaches to managing diabetes should be included, and if so, at what stage of the planned treatment.
With any change in treatment the bloodsugar levels should be meticulously monitored to ensure that optimal glycaemic control is achieved.

Dose of Sutherlandia
The recommended dose for enhanced quality-of-life is one tablet/capsule (300/400 mg of Sutherlandia or Sutherlandia-PRO) taken twice a day, after meals.

Precautions
Patients on antihypertensive medication or diabetic medication may need the doses of these medications reduced while taking Sutherlandia, and should have this monitored by their doctors.
